Dual version vision

  • Why do we need to support dual versions? I don't see any drawbacks of everyone just switching to 1.1 since it's more or less backwards compatible entirely, and us enforcing that change by whatever means possible. The new features will make it attractive for server admins to upgrade, and we could try and work on the overall switchover process. This could involve releasing the server early, giving a client release date, and making sure all server admins are ready for the switch. --Talidan 16:18, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
I don't see any drawbacks of everyone just switching to 1.1 either, but many people won't do it, at least not at first. We can't force people to upgrade and the risks of making users choose between 1.0.4 and 1.1 is that they hold on to 1.0.4 for longer. I suggest that by planning for a certain amount of coexistence between the previous and current version, we can actually get people to upgrade quicker. This is because by allowing 1.1 servers to appear in the 1.0.4 browser, we tempt 1.0.4 players to try 1.1 every time they play.
For server owners this means:
  • No punishment for servers who decide to switch to 1.1 without an 1.0.4 alternative
  • Having an instant player audience for 1.1 servers (which should increase 1.1 players counts quicker)
  • Being higher up in the server browser (as the default sorting will be 1.1 servers above 1.0 servers)
Which all encourages server owners to switch. (The real key here). Ccw 19:57, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
