__NOTOC__
This is a step by step guide for the installation and use of MTA 0.5.

Download and Install
If you haven't done so already, download MultiTheftAuto 0.5 by clicking here and start the installer.

Hit the Next button, read the EULA and click "I Agree"

The next page shows the elements that can be installed. The client is required. Please select the game you want to install MTA for (GTA3 and/or Vice City) and if you want the server and server administration tool.

Click Next again. Point the installer to the correct directories of your GTA game(s). The installer is pointed towards the default installation locations of GTA.

Keep hitting Next and before you know it, MTA is installed and ready to run.

The first run
The first time you run MultiTheftAuto 0.5, you will be presented with a "Welcome" message like the one show below:

Read the message, then click "Ok". The next screen you'll see will be the main client window. This allows you to connect to the server and change all the relevant settings:

The first thing you should do is change the Nickname from "MTAPlayer" to a name of your choice. Remember, it is not a good idea to use your real name.

If you are going to play Vice City, you should also set the "VC Version" drop down box to the correct version you have installed. If you have patched your version of Vice City (you will have downloaded a patch from the Take Two Interactive website) then you are running version 1.1. If you are not sure, you should probably leave this as 1.0. If you experience problems connecting, try changing it to 1.1.

Joining a server
NOTE: Currently, there is no functioning built-in server browser due to the All Seeing Eye shutting down several years ago. There is an external server browsing application bundled with the latest repack of MTA 0.5's installer.

Starting the game
Now that you're connected, you can use the "Chat" area to talk to the other people on the server. Just enter a message in the box at the bottom, and click "Send" or hit Enter.

When you're ready to start playing, just click the "Start Game" button and the game will launch itself. The first time you do this, you may be asked where the game is installed. If you get any errors, ensure that you have chosen an installed version of the game (Vice City or GTA3) that has no mods installed.

If you want to change where your game is installed, go to the "Options" tab and click "Reset game paths".

In-game
Once you're in-game it should be quite self explanatory. You can chat using by pressing the "T" key and typing and you can show the scoreboard using the F11 key. These keys can be changed in the config.cfg file in your game folder or via the "/bind" command in-game (read the MTA 0.5 Manual link in the Start Menu for details). If you have any problems, check the MTA 0.5 Known Issues, ask someone else when you're in a server, or post on our forums.

Have fun!
Features
* Huge increase in stability. Using the errors reported to us using the Error Report Tool, we've managed to fix a large number of the common crashes.
* New Staunton Island map available for GTA3, which includes a race mode and deathmatch.
* New Shoreside Vale map available for GTA3, which includes several gamemodes.
* Lots of changes to the existing maps.
* A server browser has been added to the client along with an area to store your favourites and a list of servers you've played on recently (History).
* New Client design - The client has been redesigned to make it easier to use. Error messages are now more self explanatory and checks are added to help users ensure their game is set up correctly.
* Added an in-client server that allows you to quickly configure and host a server straight from the MTA Client.
* Integrated the MTA Protocol handler - now mta:// links will work for all MTA 0.5 users.
* Redesigned MTA Admin Tool to make it easier and more logical to use.
* In client global MOTD so that you can hear about news from MTA immediately.
* A rich text welcome message that the server can show to players when they join. This can contain much more information than the normal Message of the Day and is visible in the client the entire time the user is on the server.
* New installation and configuration scripts for easy setup for Linux dedicated servers.
* More platforms supported for the dedicated server, including FreeBSD and OpenBSD.
* Improved error report tool is now installed by default (though optionally).
* Chat box in the client now scrolls properly, as most chat programs do (scroll up to stop auto-scroll).

Minor Updates
* Patch 1: A server patch was released; the Message of The Day feature could be exploited.
* 0.5.1 (2005): In February 2005 MTA 0.5.1 preview was shown to the public, addressing known issues and adding new features. 0.5.1 was never released.
* 0.5r2: Members of the MTA community released a minor update called 0.5r2 for 0.5, this also includes a new (external) server browser, the included server browser in 0.5 client is non-functional since 2008.
MTA:SA Race is the first release that was made with the blue framework, a new approach to control the game (GTA). The sync was also better over the previous releases and the client is in game not an external application. Notice the blue GUI in the screenshot.

A new slogan was introduced: "Stop Playing With Yourself."
Features
* In game client.
* Map Editor to create a map in game.
* Optimised netcode results in reduced lag.
* Blue loads a DLL with the game instead of injecting code into its memory process. This improves stability and means that custom SCM files do not have to be moved to the game's directory when it is started.
* Full integration means that Blue's server list is directly integrated into GTA's GUI.
* Fewer glitches. This is achieved by synchronizing every animation, implementing a custom pause menu so that people can't pause to escape death, and forcing the frame limiter on so that everyone's game runs at the same maximum speed.
* Greater synchronization, this means that MTA players can finally use boats.
* Anti cheat.

Minor Updates
* 1.1
** New mappack
** New map nomination voting system
** Respawning during map
** Map timelimit added in map files and server config
** New player animation sync
** Admins can PM players from remote admin
** The 255 map limit has been fixed
** Fixed various admin stability issues
* 1.1.1
** Fixed: Freezes that occurred frequently for some users (and not at all for others)
** Fixed: Nothing would happen after the splash screen appeared for some users
** Fixed: All players getting kicked from a server with a "protocol error 92" message
** Fixed: Players getting stuck in "You will respawn in 1 second" mode, if a race starts before they join completely
** Fixed: Issue where error reporter would sometimes fail to find core dump
** Fixed: Occasional crash when connecting to a server through the server browser
** Fixes: Various other crashes
** Added: An error message is now displayed if you try to use the ′order checkpoints′ option in the map editor if you have no checkpoints in your map
** Added: DefaultMapDuration and DefaultRespawnTime to server config
* 1.1.2
** All-Seeing Eye server-browser has been removed in favour of a more reliable and faster replacement
** Removed redundant "MTA Center" references
** Removed support for built-in error reporter

No more releases for MTA:SA Race, the new MTA release made the race version obsolete, a new resource called 'race' which could read the race maps replaced it.
MTA:San Andreas Deathmatch Developer Preview 1 was the first release that featured on-foot synchronization for San Andreas. The name deathmatch refers to the ability to shoot with weapons and get on-foot unlike the race version. The tag deathmatch has been dropped in later releases because this version allowed customized gamemodes with LUA scripting and confused players. While the first 5 releases were called 'Developer Preview' it was very popular. In August 21, 2009 version 1.0.x was released with the GPLv3 license this allowed to work with more people on the next release when it became open source.

Gamemodes
This was the first released that allowed to create customized gamemodes with the LUA scripting language. No static gamemodes.
Scripted gamemodes and utilities packed together are called resources.

Features
* On-foot synchronization.
* Improved vehicle synchronization.
* LUA scripting.
* New map editor with EDF (Editor Definition File) allowed to edit custom gamemodes created with LUA.
* Included web server in server side for remote administration or statistics.
* Client side scripting with LUA, allowing to transfer files to the client which can be used to create GUI on the client for example.

A server patch was released; the Message of The Day feature could be exploited. Patch 1

Members of the MTA community released a minor update called 0.5r2 for 0.5, this also includes a new (external) server browser, the included server browser in 0.5 client is non-functional since 2008.
MTA:SA Race is the first release that was made with the blue framework, a new approach to control the game (GTA). The sync was also better over the previous releases and the client is in game not an external application. Notice the blue GUI in the screenshot.

A new slogan was introduced: "Stop Playing With Yourself."
Features
* In game client.
* Anti cheat.

Minor Updates
* 1.1
** New mappack
** New map nomination voting system
** Respawning during map
** Map timelimit added in map files and server config
** New player animation sync
** Admins can PM players from remote admin
** The 255 map limit has been fixed
** Fixed various admin stability issues
* 1.1.1
* 1.1.2

Features
* On-foot synchronization.
* Improved vehicle synchronization.
* LUA scripting.
* New map editor with EDF (Editor Definition File) allowed to edit custom gamemodes created with LUA.
* Included web server in server side for remote administration or statistics.
* Client side scripting with LUA, allowing to transfer files to the client which can be used to create GUI on the client for example.

A server patch was released; the Message of The Day feature could be exploited. Patch 1

Members of the MTA community released a minor update called 0.5r2 for 0.5, this also includes a new (external) server browser, the included server browser in 0.5 client is non-functional since 2008.
MTA:SA Race is the first release that was made with the blue framework, a new approach to control the game (GTA). The sync was also better over the previous releases and the client is in game not an external application. Notice the blue GUI in the screenshot.
A new slogan was introduced: "Stop Playing With Yourself."
Features
* In game client.
* Anti cheat.

Minor Updates
* 1.1
** New mappack
** New map nomination voting system
** Fixed: Freezes that occurred frequently for some users (and not at all for others)
** Fixed: Nothing would happen after the splash screen appeared for some users
** Fixed: All players getting kicked from a server with a "protocol error 92" message
** Fixed: Players getting stuck in "You will respawn in 1 second" mode, if a race starts before they join completely
** Fixed: Issue where error reporter would sometimes fail to find core dump
** Fixed: Occasional crash when connecting to a server through the server browser
** Fixes: Various other crashes

Features
* On-foot synchronization.
* Improved vehicle synchronization.
* LUA scripting.
* New map editor with EDF (Editor Definition File) allowed to edit custom gamemodes created with LUA.
* Included web server in server side for remote administration or statistics.
* Client side scripting with LUA, allowing to transfer files to the client which can be used to create GUI on the client for example.

A server patch was released; the Message of The Day feature could be exploited. Patch 1

Members of the MTA community released a minor update called 0.5r2 for 0.5, this also includes a new (external) server browser, the included server browser in 0.5 client is non-functional since 2008.
MTA:SA Race is the first release that was made with the blue framework, a new approach to control the game (GTA). The sync was also better over the previous releases and the client is in game not an external application. Notice the blue GUI in the screenshot.

A new slogan was introduced: "Stop Playing With Yourself."

Features
* In game client.
* Anti cheat.

Minor Updates
* 1.1
** New mappack
** New map nomination voting system
** Respawning during map
** Map timelimit added in map files and server config
** New player animation sync
** Admins can PM players from remote admin
** The 255 map limit has been fixed
** Fixed various admin stability issues
* 1.1.1
* 1.1.2

Features
* On-foot synchronization.
* Improved vehicle synchronization.
* LUA scripting.
* New map editor with EDF (Editor Definition File) allowed to edit custom gamemodes created with LUA.
* Included web server in server side for remote administration or statistics.
* Client side scripting with LUA, allowing to transfer files to the client which can be used to create GUI on the client for example.

Have fun!

Client issues:
*Australian and German EXEs (and possibly others) may produce an "invalid executable" error when you try to start a game.
As Australian and German EXEs don't work reliably with MTA, this shouldn't be a huge problem. Try to obtain a standard EXE. You can try Talidans invalid executable patcher.
*Crash when MTA:VC DM is loading.
Make sure you run GTA3 or Vice City at least once in single player without MTA before actually running it with MTA. If that doesn't work, try the Vice 1.1 patch. If that still doesn't work, post in the support forum.
*Freeze when the client tries to display dialog asking for game path.
There have been a couple of occurrence of this, and we'd be interested to see why this is. You can avoid it by manually setting the path in the mta.ini in the Multi Theft Auto directory.

For Vice City, your mta.ini should contain (replace the path if necessary):

<pre>[Game-VC]
Version=0
Location=C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\gta-vc.exe</pre>

For GTA3:MTA, your mta.ini should contain (replace the path if necessary):

<pre>[Game-GTA3]
Version=1
Location=C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTAIII\gta3.exe</pre>
*XFire crashes game during loading.
Both XFire and MTA use similar methods for integrating themselves into the game. We've contacted XFire to offer our support for them in implementing support for MTA, but they haven't responded. If you wish to use XFire in MTA, contact XFire. In the meantime, disable XFire before you play.
*MTA claims "Suspected Trainer Usage."
Try closing every other open window first, then if that doesn't work restart MTA. If that doesn't work, try reinstalling MTA 0.5r2.
*You join a server and are told you are banned, even though you aren't in the ban list.
The cause of this is unknown. You may be banned by a over-general ban in the server's ban list.
*Client crashes when you join a server.
This crash may be caused by the client trying to download the rich text MOTD specified by the server and failing (e.g. the site its trying to get it from is down, or the URL is invalid). If this happens, the client will crash.
*You have quite a few files on your computer called mtachat.txt.
mtachat.txt, as you probably guessed, stores a chat log. This feature was added at the last moment and not properly tested. Consequently, this problem has occurred. This is probably due to how the client has been launched (the start path determines where it saves the chat, not the install path). Feel free to delete any files you don't want.
*Upon clicking "Start Game" the client informs you your client is modified.
Click Start Game again.
*When playing GTA3 you receive an "Invalid Executable" error.
This is probably because you are using GTA3 version 1.0 instead of 1.1. You can get the GTA3 1.1 patch here. If this doesn't work, or you already have GTA3 1.1, make sure you have the USA/UK EXE; you can try Talidans invalid executable patcher. Failing that, try to obtain one elsewhere.
*Your virus scanner informs you that the Multi Theft Auto 0.5r2 executable is a virus or malware.
MTA does <u>not</u> contain any viruses, malware, adware or spyware. It is flagged as a false positive because of the way the executable is packed. Ensure you only download the client from our site. This link is uploaded by our account. Use this if you doubt the validity of your copy of MTA.
*You get a crash at the address 652F30 when starting the game.
Ensure your game language is set to English.

Gameplay issues:
*MTA:VC (either map) crashes when you try to get on a motorcycle as passenger when it has no driver, as well as a couple other crashes in certain circumstances with motorcycles
Sorry, I was unable to fix this for 0.5r2. This may be fixed in a future release.
*MTA:VC DM: You are unable to jump or sprint when a Molotov is your active weapon, but you are able to jump and sprint with Grenades
This will be fixed in a future release if there is one.
*MTA:VC (either map): after exiting spectator mode, you may see a brief glimpse of Tommy falling and potentially receiving fall damage; once you spawn with a skin, you have less than 100 health
This will be fixed in a future release if there is one.
*GTA3:MTA, Turismo/Shoreside Scramble gamemode: During a race, if another racer dies, every living racer crashes.
I was also unable to fix this issue for 0.5r2. This may be fixed in a future release.
*GTA3:SSV, Van Heist gamemode: The home base marker flickers, and if the Securicar explodes, then the damage meter shows negative
Live with it, neither were worth my time to fix for 0.5r2. This may be fixed in a future release.

Server issues:
*You receive the error "ERROR: The ServerName, ServerPort, GameMap, GameHour, GameMins, Weather and BannedFile MUST be specified in the configuration file" when you run your server, and all fields are filled in. Only affects Server Patch 1 Hotfix
Ensure that your server name is 49 characters or less. This is a misleading error.
*Your client times out as soon as you connect to a server. Players all time out when they connect to your server.
This has been an unknown problem for quite some time now, but it seems it is caused not by MTA or the MTAServer but by MTA:mA, or more specifically scripts running on it. If the scripts send multiple messages to the player when they join it is highly likely to time them out. This results in nobody being able to play.

For now a fix is available for MTA:mA here (hopefully GRS will also be updated soon).

Please follow Aerons instructions regarding its use.

A big thank-you to Mike for discovering the cause of this problem and Aeron for getting a fix out so quickly.

This is a step by step guide for the installation and use of MTA 0.5.

Download and Install
If you haven't done so already, download MultiTheftAuto 0.5 by clicking here and start the installer !Sorry, but this link is under construction now!.

Dvorapa: Broken link!!!

__NOTOC__This applies to MTA 0.5r2 (both GTA3:MTA and MTA:VC). The known issues for MTA:SA 1.x can be found here.

Version=0
Location=C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\gta-vc.exe</pre>

For GTA3:MTA, your mta.ini should contain (replace the path if necessary):

<pre>[Game-GTA3]
Version=1
Location=C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTAIII\gta3.exe</pre>
This link is hosted by our webhost !Sorry, but now this link is under construction!.
